The 2014 Goodwood Festival of speed kicked off with the unveil of a spectacular central sculpture that paid homage to Mercedes-Benz’s 120 motorsport heritage. The sculpture soaring 26 meters over Goodwood House, weighing 160 tonnes and measuring 90 meters in length was unveiled by Lord March, Owner of the Goodwood Estate and Michael Bock, Head of Mercedes-Benz Classic. The sculpture has been conceived by Gerry Judah and incorporates two iconic Mercedes-Benz Silver Arrows.

The two cars spanning 80 years of Mercedes motorsport history, a replica of the 1934 Mercedes-Benz W 25 Silver Arrow, like that raced by Manfred von Brauchitsch to victory in its first ever outing at the legendary Nürburgring Nordschleife and a Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 W04, the same chassis raced by Lewis Hamilton in 15 Grands Prix in 2013 form the centre piece of the sculpture. These two cars are important to Mercedes as they are the first and (currently) last eight-cylinder Silver Arrow race cars to grace some of the most revered tracks in the world.

Unveiling the sculpture, Lord March said, “This year’s Central Feature is the most architecturally and artistically challenging sculpture that we’ve ever had at Goodwood and it’s a testament to the out-of-the-box thinking of Gerry Judah, which is very much aligned with our philosophy of constant innovation around the Festival of Speed.  The result is a truly spectacular sight for all our Festival of Speed visitors to see.”

A fireworks display and a pack of Mercedes-Benz road and racecars making their way up the Goodwood hill in darkness accompanied the unveiling. The pack of race cars, a 1904 Mercedes Grand Prix car, a 1928 Mercedes SSK, a 1955 Mercedes W196R and a 1989 Sauber-Mercedes C9 were joined by a distinctive SLS AMG Black Series, emerging from the darkness with striking glowing bodywork for the occasion.
