The German carmaker has officially confirmed that its upcoming Mercedes-Benz AMG GT will be powered by a 4.0-litre V8 twin-turbo petrol engine

Mercedes AMG GT to get new 500PS twin-turbo engine

Mercedes-Benz  decided to reduce the waiting time for AMG aficionados who like to know everything there is to know about the all-new four-valve-per-cylinder 4.0-litre V8 twin-turbo petrol engine, codenamed M178. The new V8 powerplant is set to power the forthcoming Mercedes-Benz AMG GT.

In its standard state of tune, this new engine unit will produce 503PS of power at 6,250rpm and a massive torque rating of 650Nm on a band of revs between 1,750 and 4,750rpm.

The all-new 90-degree quad-cam direct-injection unit has been developed from the ground up as a replacement for AMG’s existing naturally aspirated 6.2-litre V8 engine. The  6.2-litre V8 motor is being phased out after four years, following the end of production of the Mercedes SLS AMG in both coupe and roadster guises.

The new M178 engine, set to power the upcoming Mercedes-Benz AMG GT, is equipped with the Bosch piezo injection system which produces seven individual injections per cycle. This new engine is Euro 6 compliant and weighs 209kg because of its lightweight pistons and twin overhead camshafts. The cylinder heads feature nano-slide coating to contain friction loss.  In simple terms, there is no need of oil pan as dry sump lubrication technology is used.

The Mercedes-Benz AMG GT is expected to make its debut at the 2014 Paris Motor Show. The new car is expected to go on sale in early 2015.
