Mercedes-AMG has revealed the company could offer a standalone sedan that is not based on an existing Mercedes model in the next few years. The new car will go up against the Porsche Panamera and the Aston Martin Rapide.

Mercedes-AMG could offer a standalone performance sedan

Although AMG is known for some crazy sports cars like the recent Mercedes-AMG GT and the SLS AMG before that, they started with making high performance saloons for wealthy customers and eventually for the Mercedes racing team. And now, Mercedes-AMG for the first time will build a new purpose built performance car that will be based on nothing else in its product range.

While Mercedes-Benz has been selective in terms of releasing information about the new project, Mercedes-AMG Chairman Tobias Moers has revealed that the project will depend upon whether or not the company can build a business case for such a car. The car will also be based on a new platform that is currently under development and will feature on a few other Mercedes-Benz models in the years to come.

Most importantly though, the new car will not look like anything else in the range but will form a completely new niche and look for itself. Also expect class-leading performance using the new V8 twin-turbo engine and all-wheel-drive options. If rumours are to be believed, this new car will be the Porsche Panamera and Aston Martin Rapide competitor that Mercedes has been working on and will be based on the upcoming E-Class platform.
