In less than a fortnight of the car hitting the market, the new Mercedes-Benz A-Class hatchback has racked up an impressive 400 bookings. The strong demand for Merc’s luxury hatchback indeed indicates a change in perception of the Indian car buyer who once considered luxury to be directly related to sedans and lately to SUVs as well.

But actually, it’s not that big a surprise as more and more youngsters have the means to afford higher-end cars. And when they have a chance to buy a luxury car such as the A-Class 180 CDI with an introductory price of Rs 21.93 lakh (ex-showroom Mumbai), the proposition is a rather attractive one. Also, with our roads getting crowded by the day, people are increasingly opting for premium compact cars that are easier to drive and park.

Commenting on the success, Eberhard Kern, Managing Director & CEO, Mercedes-Benz India, said, “Already a global sensation, the success of the A-Class in India reiterates Mercedes-Benz’s stand that young India has now come of age and Indians who lead a global lifestyle today, value trendy design, dynamic driving and quality when it comes to their personal mobility preferences. The overwhelming success of the A-Class inspires us to push ahead even more aggressively with our new generation cars for the Indian market.”

As of now, the Mercedes-Benz A-Class has no direct rivals in the Indian automobile market even though iconic hatchbacks like the Volkswagen Beetle and MINI Cooper wear similar price tags as the Mercedes A-Class'. True competition for the A-Class will come from BMW when it launches the 1-Series hatchback in India later in 2013.
