McLaren unveils their 2008 F1 challenger

Formula One Team, Vodafone McLaren Mercedes uncovered their 2008 F1 racecar MP4-23 on January 7th, 2008, in front of more than 700 employees and 400 media guests at the Mercedes-Benz Museum located in Stuttgart, Germany. It was probably the best birthday gift anyone would have ever got and Lewis Hamilton who turned 23 the same day seemed highly excited throughout the launch. Hamilton and his team-mate Heikki Kovalainen will start testing the MP4-23 only by January 10th, 2008 at the Jerez Circuit in Spain.

Chairman and CEO, McLaren Group, Ron Dennis said, "This year we will fight for the Drivers as well as Constructors World Championships. The entire team has been working very hard to get the car ready as early as possible, so that the drivers get considerable time to test the cars before all F1 team's head to Australia for the first race of the 2008 season" He also mentioned the purpose behind launching the MP4-23 at the Mercedes-Benz Museum was to highlighting the strength of their partnership with Daimler Group.

The design development of the MP4-23 commenced 10 months ago in November 2006 and more than 14,000 man-hours have gone in since then, out of which over 3,000 man-hours were spent in wind-tunnel testing. Though, the MP4-23 is significantly improved over last year's MP4-22, there is very little visual difference between the two as of now. However, before the season starts, there will be certain visual upgrades in terms of aerodynamic surfaces, wings, bodywork, bargeboards and additional bodywork components. The team has already started working on the 2009 racecar alongside the development of MP4-23 since November last year. Also the KERS project (energy storage) has commenced almost a year before.
