McLaren MP4-12C Spider unveiled!
The MP4-12C Spider is almost as quick as the Coupe and betters the only aspect it was lacking in, its looks

McLaren’s convertible MP4-12C Spider has been showcased for the first time and the British supercar indeed ups the ante in the design department. As brilliant as the coupe version of the MP4-12C is, the design was a little too serious. With the Spider however, it looks every bit as gorgeous as a supercar should.
The McLaren MP4-12C Spider gets a Retractable Hard Top (RHT) roof that takes less than 17 seconds to raise or lower and can be operated on the go at speeds of up to 30km/h.
Taking the roof off a supercar makes it look a whole lot cooler, but structural integrity of the vehicle is compromised as there is no roof connecting the upper portion of the vehicle to the rear. This compromises handling. However, with the McLaren MP4-12C Spider things are a little bit different. McLaren built the MP4-12C with a carbon fibre monocoque chassis derived from Formula One; this means that the vehicle was initially designed without a roof. As a result, lopping off the roof causes no structural imbalance to the Spider and no additional strengthening is required to maintain the vehicle’s original structural rigidity.
This has allowed McLaren to keep the weight of the vehicle close to that of the Coupe version. The MP4-12C weighs just 40kg more than the Coupe (due to its folding hard top roof and its operating mechanism).
