In recent years, there has been a growing trend of modernising classic cars mechanicially to make them more usable on a day to day basis while keeping the basic essence of their design the same. Eagle’s Roadster, a modern take on Jaguar’s legendary E-Type and the Singer 911, a modern take on the Porsche 911 from the 70’s are perhaps the most notable examples of this trend. Now, another Jaguar, the Mark 2 sedan from the 1960s has undergone a transformation at the hands of possibly the best designer of our generation, Ian Callum.
The Jaguar Mark 2 has always been one of the most beautiful classic sedans ever built and with Callum’s touches, it gets even better. The car has been built by British restoration specialists, Classic Motor Cars and features several changes to the car’s exteriors, interiors and mechanical aspects that makes it an ideal ‘resto mod’. On the exterior front, the car features integrated bumpers combined with a set of new air intakes that showcase Jaguar’s current design language. The car also features a set of traditional louvers on the side that help with the overall internal airflow in the engine bay.
Speaking on the occasion of the announcement, Ian Callum said: “This is a very personal statement. A long held notion that, although the Mark 2 has always been a beautiful car, it could be even more exciting in shape and performance. Whilst maintaining the purity of the car’s form, I wanted to add a number of modern twists to the design. Simplification and clarity was my objective.”
Featuring a modified and uprated 4.3-litre XK engine mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox, unique independent rear suspension and upgraded front brakes, the Mark 2 by Callum beings the large 60s sedan into the 21st century. The ‘Mark 2 by Callum’as it is officially called also sits lower than the original car and gets a set of 17-inch spoke wheels that add to the overall appeal of the car while giving it an excellent stance.
Judging from the excellent response from the automotive community at large, CMC has decided to build the ‘Mark 2 by Callum’ in very limited production numbers. Each car will cost between Rs 3.5-4.5 Crore (excluding shipping, duties, taxes and registration).
