Maruti Suzuki has its eyes set on the fast growing compact-SUV and crossover segment. Quenching the mini-SUV needs will be a much awaited new model based on the Maruti XA Alpha concept which was showcased at the 2012 Auto Expo. This model is due to be launched in later half of 2015. But before that the company will launch a new crossover in India in the shape of Maruti Suzuki S-Cross.
Following the recent popularity of Ford EcoSport and Renault Duster, India’s leading carmaker Maruti followed suit and unveiled the Maruti S-Cross earlier this year during the 2014 Auto Expo. This crossover shares the new Suzuki SX4 platform which is available in the international markets and based on the European configuration, which has received maximum 5-star Euro NCAP overall safety rating.
The new crossover is being rigorously tested in the country, to ensure that it meets the early 2015 launch deadline. One of the first test mules of the anticipated Maruti S-Cross was caught testing recently on the Chandigarh-Ambala highway by a member of My Fiat World car enthusiasts group.
These spy pictures have captured a Maruti S-Cross wrapped in black camouflage trying to guise its bold SUV-ish design. But what’s evident is that the crossover will sport sump guards in front and back and has good ground clearance. Inside, the car will have a spacious cabin with a capacity to seat five individuals, along with a generous boot. The interior design will be similar to the existing Maruti range using the black-and-grey combination highlighted with brush metal accents.
The European Suzuki S-Cross is available with a 1.6-litre four-cylinder petrol engine which produces 120PS of power and 156Nm of torque, mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox or a CVT. The international diesel option on the Suzuki S-Cross is a 1.6-litre oil-burner capable of delivering 120PS of power and 320Nm of torque, combined with a 6-speed manual transmission. In India, Maruti has not disclosed the engine options as of now but we expect the Maruti S-Cross to be offered in both petrol and diesel engine options.
Internationally the Suzuki S-Cross comes equipped with an optional four-wheel-drive system, along with a four driving modes. We doubt if Maruti will launch these features in India. In a price sensitive country like ours, Maruti may introduce just the two-wheel-drive option and may introduce these later on in its top-of-the-line variants to keep the sales momentum going.
The Maruti S-Cross will be the company’s first crossover in India and is expected to be launched early next year with a price tag of around Rs 10 lakh. Besides this, the automobile major is expected to launch another five new models in a span of the next 24 month.
