Maruti Suzuki S-Cross revealed at IIFA in Malaysia

Maruti Suzuki’s S-Cross is the latest car to grace a star-studded event as its unveiling to the Indian car market. At the IIFA Awards held in Malaysia over the weekend, Maruti rolled in the S-Cross on stage revealing for the first time, most likely the Indian Spec version.

Going by the picture, the S-Cross gets all crossover styling elements you’d expect. Full plastic cladding running around the base of the car from the bumper around the wheel wells to the side skirts of the car, and fixed chunky roof rails. This however doesn’t look like the top-end variant of the S-Cross as the car doesn’t sport alloy wheels.

The S-Cross isn’t going to be a sub 4-metre car so engine choices will not be constrained to the 1.2-petrol and 1.5-diesel norm. Nevertheless, the diesel bread winner for the S-Cross will still be the 1.3-litre Multijet engine from Fiat. It will develop 90PS of power and could be a bit underpowered compared to competition. There have been spy pictures of a 1.6 S-Cross doing the rounds, one with the larger 120PS Fiat Multijet engine but we can’t quite say if it will be introduced at launch. The petrol engine is the same 1.4-litre 93PS unit doing duty in the Ciaz and Ertiga.

What we can safely assume is that the S-Cross with the 1.3-litre diesel engine will be a very fuel-efficient car to buy considering it returns about 26kmpl in the Ciaz. The S-Cross is expected to be launched in India in a month or two with a starting price of about Rs 6.5-7 lakh, going up to about 10 lakh for the top variants.
