Maruti Suzuki bucks the trend in bleak car market

by TNN Posted on 03 Jul 20124,605 Views Comments

In a bleak auto market reeling under the twin blows of spiralling fuel and finance costs, Maruti Suzuki's robust double-digit growth in June over a year ago comes as a much-needed glimmer of good tidings

True, the uptick in sales of India's No 1 carmaker may be exaggerated because of the low base in June 2011 as a result of a workers' strike at the plant in Manesar near Delhi. Yet, a clutch of new, relatively successful recent launches has helped Maruti buck the lacklustre market trend.

If sales of Suzuki's Indian affiliate soared 20% to 83,531 cars in June, the surge was largely due to strong demand for models like the Swift, DZire and the recently-launched Ertiga multipurpose vehicle. Exports also grew by a healthy 27% to 13,066 cars in June as Maruti started shipping the Ertiga out of India. Also read: Maruti Suzuki plans 800cc diesel engine

Sales of compact models like the Estilo, Swift and Ritz grew 39% to 22,624 units, while those of the newly-launched DZire sedan shot up by 453% to 13,741 units in June.

The top-selling cars like Swift and DZire are manufactured at the Manesar plant and were affected by the labour unrest there.

In contrast, older models were part of the slump that has plagued the broader market.

The M800, A-Star, Alto and WagonR fell 10% to 34,198 units in June, while bigger models like the SX4 and the Kizashi sports sedan declined by 43% and 81%, respectively, in the domestic market.
