The new Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 is available in three variants along with CNG versions of each, taking the total number of variants to six. Here is a look at how they are different from each other

Maruti Suzuki Alto 800

Maruti Suzuki had amassed over 10,000 bookings for the new Alto 800 even before the car was launched on October 16, 2012. That shows that India’s largest car maker, Maruti Suzuki knows what it is doing. The new Maruti Suzuki 800, now called the Alto 800, is a modern reincarnation of the iconic 800.

For the new car Maruti has stuck to the tried and tested formula. The new Alto 800 will feature the same three variants as that of the previous Alto, namely, Standard (Std), LX and LXi. However all three variants are also on offer as CNG models, making a total of six variants.

Here is how they are different from each other:

1. Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 Standard (Std) / CNG Std

(Price Rs 2.44 lakh, CNG Rs 3.19 lakh)

The base model of the Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 like that of the previous Alto is completely stripped out. The car gets a rear-view mirror on the driver’s side, black bumpers and door handles on the outside with half wheel caps. On the inside, the interiors are finished in grey plastics, the B- and C-pillars are exposed and there are no plastic panels on them. The seats are upholstered in double vinyl.

As far as creature comforts go, the Standard variant of the Maruti Alto 800 does not get air-conditioning nor power steering (like the previous Alto Std). It has neither  remote hatch opener nor fuel lid opener, clock, internally adjustable driver’s side outside rear-view mirror. There is no map pocket on the driver’s side door, but you do get a bottle holder and can holders. The front wiper is a two-speed unit.

While all of this is still understandable, the fact that the front passenger does not have a sun visor is not acceptable (the BS III Maruti Suzuki 800 has one!). Also the lack of a outside rear view on the left side is the outright lack of a basic safety feature.

The Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 packs in other features like engine immobiliser, collapsible steering column and tubeless tyres.

2. Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 LX / LX CNG

(Price Rs 2.76 lakh, CNG and Rs 3.37 lakh)

The LX model gets air-conditioning, remote fuel lid opener, fabric upholstered seats, the B and C-pillars are now covered with plastic panels and the front passenger now gets a sun visor. Other features over the Std variant include a driver’s side map pocket and front intermittent wiper.

All else remains the same. The Alto 800 in LX trim comes with black bumpers and door handles, the wheels get half wheel caps, there is no remote hatch opener, it does not have a clock, there is no power steering and the driver’s side outside rear-view mirror is not internally adjustable.

The new Alto 800 LX packs in other features like engine immobiliser, collapsible steering column and tubeless tyres.

3. Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 LXi / CNG LXi

(Price Rs 2.99 lakh, CNG Rs 3.56 lakh)

The top-of-the-line LXi trim of the new Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 gets door handles and body coloured bumpers with a chrome accentuated front grille. A full wheel cap with black wheel rims completes the exterior styling package.

Inside, the cabin has been garnished with fabric on the door cards, grey and brown plastic, fabric seat upholstery, silver accents on the interior door handles, speedometer, steering wheel and instrument panel.

Creature comforts include internally adjustable driver’s side rear-view mirror, front power windows, and a digital clock.

The Alto 800 LXi also gets the option of a driver’s side airbag along with a collapsible steering column and engine immobiliser.

The new Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 will compete with the Chevrolet Spark and Hyundai Eon but is considerably more affordable than both in variant wise comparison.

Affordability is the key criteria in the new Alto 800 market segment and in that aspect Maruti Suzuki has trumped its rivals completely.
