Maruti Suzuki stops production at their Gurgaon plant after continual unrest at the supplying unit at Manesar

In a recent announcement, Maruti Suzuki revealed that it will temporarily halt production at their plant in Gurgaon for the next two days. Meanwhile, no cars have also been produced from the car maker’s other assembly unit in Manesar.

Al the parts for producing the K-series engines at Gurgaon are sourced from the Manesar plant. As the unrest continues, the number of vehicles produced at Gurgaon was taking a hit due to shortage of parts. The assembly unit produced only 600 units on Thursday as opposed to its normal daily production of 2,800 units.  Even though cars like the M-800, Omni, Eeco and Gypsy are not dependant on the parts from their SPIL plant (Suzuki Powertrain India Limited) “Operating the plant only for these models will be unviable. The production loss for these models can be recovered once the production resumes,” a spokesperson said.

Production of all their cars have has already taken a huge hit including the new Swift courtesy the stay-in strike at the SPIL plant that has been on and off since June this year. Only a few weeks after the launch of the new Swift, the car had a waiting period of over a month.

A spokesperson of the company said that the continuation of work at the SPIL factory rests in the hands of the works and that they will initiate a dialogue only after they vacate the plant. For the time being, the Gurgaon plant will remain shut for two days and the authorities will look into the matter on Sunday.

One thing can be said with certainty; MSIL will have to find a way out of this mess especially keeping in mind that it is the largest car maker by sales in India and also with the oncoming festive season.
