Mahindra is in the final stages of having their smallest offering, codenamed S101, ready for its launch in January 2016.

Mahindra S101

Mahindra has been working on the S101 which has been spotted on various occasions performing tests under heavy camouflage. The S101 will be the smallest SUV offering Mahindra has ever introduced in the market. The recent spy images suggest that the S101 is now in the final stage prior to production, with launch expected to happen sometime in January 2016. The newest offering will be up against the Hyundai Eon, Maruti Wagon R and Renault Kwid if priced correctly.

Talking about the S101, the micro-SUV will stand ground in the sub-four metre segment and will be built on a monocoque chassis layout. The current test vehicles of the S101 have given an idea of what we can expect from the micro-SUV. Starting from the exterior, the S101 will sport a three-way split radiator grille akin to its bigger sibling XUV5OO. Moving to the side profile, the S101 receives the typical Mahindra muscular body structure. The rear does not receive any significant body contours.

Feature-wise, the S101 will receive a door handles located in the C-pillar, as seen on the Chevrolet Beat, a rear windscreen wiper, rear spoiler, third brake lamp, rear fog lamps mounted on the bumper. Inside, the gearbox lever has been mounted on the dashboard to keep the interior cabin spacious. The S101 likely to receive safety equipment like airbags, anti-lock brakes, and electronic power steering.
Getting to what powers the S101, the micro-SUV is likely to be powered by a tweaked and downsized version of Mahindra’s mHawk series-80 diesel mill which currently runs the Mahindra Quanto and Mahindra TUV300. Speculation of a possible 1.2 litre petrol offering are also doing the rounds, but will be only be confirmed at the time of launch.

Pricing would be a crucial agenda in deciding where the S101 makes its place in the Indian passenger car segment. We expect Mahindra’s S101 to be priced in the range of 4-6 lakh making it a competitive option to its rivals.
