The Lexus NX ushers in two firsts for the Japanese firm - compact crossover and forced induction. The NX could also be a good fit for India

Lexus will launch its new compact crossover, the NX, at the Beijing Auto Show. The Lexus NX will be the first model from Toyota’s luxury marquee to sport a forced induction model. So far, Lexus which focuses mainly on the Japanese and American markets, has only had naturally aspirated petrol engines and petrol-hybrid drivetrains in its lineup. The NX, says Lexus, will also be offered with naturally aspirated and hybrid petrol powertrains.

Powertrains will vary depending on the region with the US getting NX 200t turbo and NX 300h hybrid models along with the NX 200t F SPORT which will come with unique exterior and interior features, says Lexus. The Lexus LF-NX concepts, originally introduced at the 2013 Frankfurt and Tokyo Motor Shows, influenced the striking and emotional design of the NX. The idea behind the new NX, as it is with most compact crossover, is to appeal to the young, urban crowd by offering them a vehicle that’s convenient in the cities but has more versatility than regular sedans and hatchbacks.

The NX adopts Lexus’ new design philosophy to the T. It sports the new Lexus spindle grille and comes with LED headlamps and daytime running lamps. Along with a swooping roofline and flared wheel arches – which can house 17 and 18 inch wheels – it gives the NX and bold, muscular and modern stance. The rear is punctuated by Lexus' signature 'L' shape combination lamps with LED lighting.

The highlight of the NX though is its new turbocharged, 2-litre petrol engine and the fact that it comes with all wheel drive. The NX also gets touch interface, a multi- information display with G sensor and boost meter, Heads-Up Display, all-speed dynamic radar cruise control and blind spot monitor among other tech.

Toyota had also announced Lexus’ Indian debut a few years back. But, with the trend in luxury cars moving towards diesel engines, not to mention Lexus’ lack of modern models to take on the German and British competition, Toyota quietly put Lexus’ launch on the backburner. Now though, with cars like the new IS, GS and the NX, Lexus does have the models to attract the savvy Indian luxury car buyer. Diesel engine, however, still remains an issue.
