Land Rover Discovery Sport unveiled

After months of teaser pictures and videos showcasing the new Land Rover Discovery Sport, JLR has finally taken the wraps off their all-new entry-level SUV. The new Discovery Sport has been positioned as a premium compact SUV and will get seven seats as standard. The new Discovery Sport will be priced cheaper than the standard LR4 Discovery model and will be available in showrooms worldwide from early next year.

The new Discovery Sport uses modern styling cues from the likes of more expensive Land Rover Models like the Range Rover, the Range Rover Sport and the Range Rover Evoque and combines it with the traditional stance and appeal of the older Discovery and Freelander. For example, the C-pillar pays homage to the highly successful Freelander 1 compact SUV that was launched in the early 90s. That said, the funky headlamp cluster and the typically Land-Rover front grille make the Discovery sport’s identity unmistakable. The new Land Rover Discovery Sport is also much lighter due to a large percentage of aluminum used in its construction.

The signature side vents combined with the flared rear and front fenders give the new Land Rover Discovery Sport a ton of character. The integrated spoiler with an integrated brake light also looks appealing and goes well with the jet inspired tail lamps. Although the rear is very reminiscent of Range Rover Evoque and the Range Rover sport, the larger dimensions combined with the twin exhausts make it look modern and appealing.

The new Land Rover Discovery Sport will come with both a petrol and diesel engine. Although the specs for the diesel have mot been announced yet, we assume the Discovery will get the same tried and tested 2.2-litre, turbocharged, 4-cylinder motor with 180PS of peak power. On the other hand, the 2.0-litre, turbocharged, 4-cylinder petrol engine will make 250PS of peak power. Both engines will be mated to the all-new 9-speed gearbox and will come with an all-wheel-drive system.

On the interior front, as we mentioned earlier, the Land Rover Discovery Sport will seat seven people. As expected, the Discovery Sport comes with an array of gizmos on the interior front including an all new 5-inch color LCD screen in between the two main instrument gauges. The screen will be used to display vital data such as fuel levels, temperature, drive modes, etc. Top of the line models will also include twin-needle-stitched leather on the upper reaches of the instrument panel, seats and door surfaces combined with heated and cooled seats. The central 8-inch, touch screen display combined with the configurable mood lighting will also be offered. The rear seat passengers will also get an inbuilt iPad holder.

Expect the Land Rover Discovery Sport to make it to India by early next year and be priced at about Rs 45-50 lakh (Ex-showroom, Mumbai). The Discovery Sport will take on rivals like the Audi Q5, the newly refreshed BMW X3 and Mercedes ML-Class.
