Nissan has taken the racing world by storm with its first mirrorless car, the Zeod RC, which sets itself apart from the pack even before the race has started. During test day at Circuit de la Sarthe, the Nissan Zeod RC hit the track minus an important safety accessory - its rear-view mirrors.
Worry not though, the Nissan Zeod RC is equipped with something much better - a rear-view camera. The Japanese carmaker has taken inspiration from its Nissan Safety Shield and Nissan Smart Mirror for the road to develop systems aboard the new car.
The camera has been mounted on the Nissan Zeod RC’s rear bumper, which according to the Japanese carmaker, provides a better view even when seen on the same space as the mirror view. In addition to the camera, the Zeod RC is equipped with a radar system that not only alerts the drivers about upcoming traffic, but provides further insight on closing speed through large arrows on the screen.
On the test day, drivers Wolfgang Reip and Tommy Erdos made history by completing laps without the mirrors that are mandatory for every other entry in the 56-car field. The dual-systems will again be used in France for practise and qualifying where Reip will be joined by Lucas Ordonez and Satoshi Motoyama.
Technologies developed for the Nissan Zeod RC will also be incorporated into Nissan's new LM P1 entry for the Le Mans 24 Hours and the FIA World Endurance Championship.
