The youngest son of Argentine-born Cuban revolutionary Ernesto "Che" Guevara is behind a tourism initiative offering Harley-Davidson tours in Cuba

Ernesto Guevara of La Poderasa Tours

Forty-nine-year-old Ernesto Guevara, a lawyer by profession, is the leader and co-ordinator of the project and introduces himself as having “inherited from his father a passion for motorcycles, which has enabled him to traverse the country and know it like few others.”

The tours – and the name of the travel agency, La Poderasa Tours – are inspired by the expedition that Che Guevara and his friend, Alberto Granado made in 1952 on a run-down 1939 single-cylinder Norton 500cc, dubbed La Poderasa (“The Mighty One”).

The La Poderasa Tours website introduces the leader as a “lover of Harleys who has devoted over 20 years of his life to restoring Harley-Davidsons.” Camilo Sanchez, a childhood friend of Ernesto and Sergio Morales, a Harley-Davidson mechanic who is Cuba’s most famous Harley aficionado and even appears in the Harley-Davidson History Wall in Milwaukee, are also behind the project.

The agency offers tours starting at US$ 3,000 (about Rs 2 lakh) per couple and US$ 4,200 (about Rs 2.7 lakh) for individual packages. The expeditions begin in Havana and cover routes that include the cities of Santa Clara, Cienfuegos, Trinidad and Cayo Santa Maria island. The tours are offered in a mixture of 6 days/5 nights and 9 days/8 nights packages, all on Harley-Davidson motorcycles. Customized tours and even private group tours are also provided.
