New scooter models help TVS Motors pip Hero MotoCorp, as the later struggles with production constraints

TVS overtakes Hero in scooter sales in second quarter of 2014 Financial Year

Riding on the steady demand of the TVS Jupiter 110cc scooter, TVS Motor has managed to jump ahead of the nation’s largest two-wheeler maker, Hero MotoCorp clinching the second spot in the scooter segment of India. According to the sales data released by SIAM (Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers), TVS Motor managed to sell over 1.89 lakh units of scooters in the second quarter of this financial year, while Hero MotoCorp ended with 1.66 units in the same quarter. Honda retained the top slot in the scooters market, churning out a stunning two lakh units every month on an average.

Besides the popularity of TVS Jupiter, what has helped TVS Motor to overtake Hero MotoCorp in scooter sales is the production related issues the later is facing. It will be an uphill task for TVS Motor to retain this lead, as Hero MotoCorp is working on increasing its scooter capacity from the current 80,000 units to one lakh units a month by early next year. And once Hero’s new plant in Gujarat is up and running by mid-2015, this number is set to further increase to 1.5 lakh a month. Besides, Hero MotoCorp is also considering to introduce new scooter models next year, including the Hero Dash 110cc scooter and the sporty 125cc Dare scooter which were unveiled during the 2014 Auto Expo.
