The bikes were stolen in Tacoma, Washington on September 22 during the final overnight stop for the 2014 Motorcycle Cannonball Run. A support vehicle towing an enclosed trailer was also stolen from Hotel Murano in Tacoma.
The trailer was recovered in the Port of Tacoma, ready to be shipped overseas. The Cannonball Run logo on the trailer was covered with spray paint. While the four motorcycles were still inside, many spare parts – including a disassembled fifth bike – and other items are missing, according to reports. The Ford F-150 pickup, used to tow the trailer, was found almost 32 kilometres from Tacoma, in Auburn, Washington.
The trailer’s owner Jon Newman, from Texas, and hid friends were in Tacoma last weekend participating in the 2014 Motorcycle Cannonball Endurance Run. The 6,400 kilometre ride started September 5 in Daytona Beach, Florida. More than 100 riders astride motorcycles from before 1937 began this cross country adventure.
The Motorcycle Cannonball Endurance run was started in 2010 and initially many people thought that none of the motorcycles gathered for that event would complete the coast-to-coast ride. With three Cannonball Runs having already been completed successfully, the every-other-year competition has become one of the true highlights of antique motorcycling in America. The next Cannonball Run will be held in 2016.
