With an aim to relieve driver stress, General Motors (GM) has plans to introduce Cadillac models in two years that incorporate hands-free driving and Wi-Fi-enabled vehicle-to-vehicle communications to exchange traffic information with similarly equipped vehicles.

The company states that the semi-autonomous freeway system called ‘Super Cruise’ will be an option on a new Cadillac that will go on sale in 2016. The company also plans to put vehicle-to-vehicle transmitters and receivers on all Cadillac CTS models during the same time frame.

The Super Cruise system uses a series of cameras and sensors to drive the car automatically. The American carmaker explains that the Super Cruise technology will offer customers a new type of driving experience that includes hands-off lane following, braking and speed control in certain highway driving conditions.

The vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) technology on the other hand allows vehicles to send and receive information about their speed, location and direction of travel. This information is then used to warn drivers about potential collisions ahead of time.

The company, however, acknowledges that the capabilities of this new technology will be limited until a significant number of vehicles come equipped with the same technology allowing them to talk to one another. GM will likely be the first automaker to offer a vehicle-to-vehicle communication system on a production vehicle. All these announcements were made at the start of an intelligent vehicle conference in Detroit by GM CEO Mary Barra.
