Jehan Daruvala Bags First Position In Hungary

Jehan Daruvala, from the Sahara Force India Academy, has bagged the first position at the Hungaroring F1 Circuit in the Formula Renault 2.0 NEC Series. It is the first maiden victory for Jehan in this Championship Series. The podium win has put him in the lead on the Championship points table, with 112 points.

During the practice session, Jehan had started in the third and the sixth position. However, the qualifying session for Race 1 did not turn out well for him as both of his fastest laps were deleted for exceeding track limits. Jehan had to start Race 1 from the eighth position. Unfortunately, there was more that added to his misery. The car in front of him stalled when the lights went off, causing him to lose a few positions. The unfortunate start was followed by a mishap during the last lap, wherein, the front wing of another car clipped Jehan’s rear wheel, causing his car to spin around. The first race was won by Lando Norris of Britain, while Jehan managed to bag the 13th position.

Fortunately for Race 2, Jehan had started from position two in the grid. Off to a good start, he followed up close to Lando Norris. As both the drivers pulled ahead creating a gap from the rest of the pack, Lando went off-track and into the barriers during the fourth lap. After the safety car pulled in, Jehan was able to maintain his lead as he slowly widened the gap between him and the second position racer. He managed to clock the fastest lap of the race and achieved a comfortable win with a lead of 1.4 seconds ahead of the Russian driver Robert Shwartzman.

Commenting on his win in Race 2 Jehan said: “After having everything seem to go against me in Race 1, I am really happy with the way Race 2 turned out. It was crucial for me to protect the lead at the restart and after that, I was able to consistently lap quicker than everyone behind me. It was a special moment to hear our National Anthem being played across the Circuit and I would like to thank the entire team at Josef Kaufmann Racing -- Pieter, my coach,Jon and Craig of PAP, and Don my mind coach. Thank you also to Sahara Force India for all their support.”

The next race will be held in Monza during 2-3 July as part of the Formula Renault EuroCup Series.
