The Renault-Nissan Alliance and Daimler AG have expanded their cooperation with joint development of premium compact vehicles in recent times and are now expanding it further with a joint production facility in Mexico. The two automotive giants have announced that they have decided to get into a 50:50 joint venture for the factory that will be based in Aguascalientes in north-central Mexico. The new plant will be built in the immediate vicinity of an already existing Nissan plant and will have an annual capacity of three lakh vehicles when complete and at capacity.
On the occasion, Carlos Ghosn, Chairman and CEO of the Renault-Nissan Alliance said, “Joint development of compact premium vehicles and joint production in Aguascalientes together represent one of the largest projects between the Renault-Nissan Alliance and Daimler. It also shows how our collaboration, which began in Europe, has become global in scope.”
Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars also said, “In Aguascalientes, we will take our successful partnership to the next level by combining the skills of our two companies Daimler and Nissan in one production plant. Just over four years after the cooperation was founded, the decision for the new plant in Mexico is a major milestone.”
The plant is set to be complete by 2017 and will first produce Infiniti cars with Mercedes-Benz production starting in 2018. Daimler and Nissan have also announced that they will share the total investment cost of the factory which is set at approximately one million Euros. The new plant will employ about 5700 new employees including support staff, line workers and engineering staff by the time the plant reaches its full capacity by 2021.
Nissan and Daimler have also recently launched a new four-cylinder petrol engine that will be produced in their engine plant at Decherd, Tennessee, USA. The plant will make more than 2.5 lakh units annually and will be essential for the new Mercedes-Benz C-Class and the Infiniti Q50. Later this year, the Nissan-Renault and Daimler joint venture will start selling the next generation Renault Twingo and Smart Four-Two in Europe. The two cars based on a jointly developed platform will be made in Renault’s plant in Slovenia and France.
