Hyundai will now focus its energies on developing a MPV and a sub-4 metre compact SUV scheduled to be launched in 2016

Hyundai Creta

With the launch of the new Creta today, Hyundai has finally made an entry in the competitive compact SUV segment. And now that Hyundai has ensured that it has offerings in the Crossover as well as the Compact SUV class, it is time for them to focus on the next big segment in the Indian market – MPVs. At the launch of the Creta, Hyundai also revealed that they are working on a MPV as well as another smaller SUV.

While details of both these cars are still sketchy, it is safe to assume that like the Creta, both these cars will also be based on the hatchback Elite i20. As far as the engine is concerned, the MPV is expected to be offered with the same petrol and diesel powerplants as the Creta. It will come with a 1.6-litre petrol unit that makes 123PS and 155Nm, a 1.4-litre diesel that pumps 90PS and 220Nm and a larger 1.6-litre diesel churning 128PS and 259Nm. In fact, when it is launched, the MPV might just be the first diesel automatic in its class. The smaller compact SUV though is expected to get the smaller engines options like the Xcent. It will be offered with a 1.2-litre petrol that makes 81 horses and 114Nm and a 1.1-litre diesel that produces 72PS and 180Nm.

When launched, the MPV will take on the likes of the Honda Mobilio, the Renault Lodgy and the the Mahindra Xylo. The sub-4 metre SUV on the other hand only has the Ford EcoSport as its direct competitor as on date.
