Scooter sales rev in February, motorcycles skid

Honda, TVS and Suzuki saw continued growth in scooter sales in February 2015, but motorcycles sales saw decline, with Bajaj Auto sales declining by almost 21 per cent last month. Though not much in pure volumes, the only aberration in motorcycle sales was Royal Enfield, growing by 49 per cent

Honda Activa 3G

Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India dominated scooter sales in February 2015, with the company marking the highest domestic market share of 29 per cent. In all, Honda sold 3,61,493 units in  February 2015, posting overall growth of 10 per cent over the same month last year.

Scooter sales dominate Honda’s sales volumes, accounting for 2,08,811 units in February, compared to 1,39,334 units of motorcycle sales. In February, Honda unveiled five new products, most of them upgrades, including the Activa 3G, new refreshed Dio, CB Shine, Dream Yuga and Dream Neo.

Up till February 2015, Honda for the first time has crossed sales of 40 lakh units in a financial year, selling 40,53,867 units in the period April 2014-February 2015. Scooter sales again accounted for over 22 lakh of this figure, motorcycles accounting for a little over 16 lakh units. In the same period, Honda posted 22 per cent domestic growth.

Hero Dash

Market leader Hero MotoCorp sold 484,769 units in February 2015 as against 504,181 units sold in February 2014. The company has registered a fall of 3.85 percent YoY for this month. Hero however, is gearing up with several launches this year, including the 110cc Honda Activa competitor Hero Dash. Hero is also in the process of ramping up production capacity of scooters.

Motorcycle sales continue to take a hit in February 2015. Pune-based Bajaj Auto sold 216,077 units (including exports) during February 2015. Monthly sales however, saw a decline of nearly 21 per cent over the same month last year.

With several launches slated for the coming calendar year, including the just-launched new Platina ES, pipped as the world’s most fuel efficient bike, and a number of refreshes and technology upgrades in the Pulsar line-up. 

TVS Scooty Zest

Hosur-based TVS Motor Company, on the other hand, continues to do well in sales numbers. The company has recorded a growth of 11.47 percent by selling 164,508 units in the domestic market, a jump from 147,580 units a year ago. 

And these numbers are driven largely by scooter sales, which grew 35.15 per cent in February 2015, selling 56,750 units as against 41,990 units in February last year.  Motorcycle sales for TVS in February 2015 stood at 74,292 units, up by 18.37 percent. 

Royal Enfield has recorded domestic market sales of 29,491 motorcycles in February 2015, up 49percent from 19,840 in February last year. Royal Enfield sold 749 bikes in the export market, again up 49 percent from 503 in February last year.

Mahindra Two Wheelers has sold a total of 8,591 units during February 2015, down a considerable 53 percent from 17,848 units a year ago. Of this, the company’s domestic sales stood at 8,289 units during the month, while exports stood at 302 units. 

Riding on sales of the highly acclaimed Suzuki Gixxer, automatic scooters Access and Let’s, Suzuki Motorcycle India Pvt Ltd has posted over 12 per cent growth in sales during the month of February.

Suzuki Motorcycle India Pvt Ltd sold 30,467 units in February 2015, as opposed to 27,007 units in February 2014, recording a growth of 12.81 per cent in overall sales.
