American Honda Motor Co has written a letter to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) describing the defect.
“A resin bracket inside the fuel pump may swell and interfere with the impeller which may cause the fuel pump to stop working properly. While parked, this can prevent the engine from starting. While riding, particles may become stuck between the bracket and the impeller causing the engine to stall and possibly not restart,” Honda’s letter states.
Affected Grom models were produced from June 12, 2013 through September 24, 2014 and affected Forza models were produced from June 18, 2013 through May 21, 2014. In all, 10,076 units will be potentially affected by the issue.
Initial investigations into the issue were begun in June 2014, after receiving reports from the component manufacturer, Thai Summit Mitsuba. By October 2014, Honda determined that a safety defect exists and decided to initiate the recall in North America.
Owners of affected Honda models will be contacted via mail with a request to take the vehicle to a Honda motorcycle dealer, who will replace the fuel pump, free of charge.
