Volvo unveils 450PS 2.0-litre engine

When Volvo uncovered its new 2015 Volvo XC90 sometime back it announced that all its versions will be powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine. The base variant in the XC90 can be had with a T6 engine that generates 320PS of power, but the Swedish carmaker has now dished out details of a more powerful four-cylinder engine which generates a whopping 450PS of power.

The new high performance Drive-E Powertrain is currently billed as a concept and incorporates two parallel turbochargers fed by a third electric turbo-compressor. The compressed air is used to spool up the two parallel turbochargers rather than being fed to the cylinders. In this configuration, the gasoline is fed by a dual fuel pump working at 250-bar pressure.

Peter Mertens, Senior Vice-President, Research and Development, Volvo Car Group, said, “When we launched the Drive-E powertrain family, our aim was to deliver the most advanced four-cylinder engines in the industry based on emissions and fuel consumption relative to performance and drivability. We knew that 320PS in our petrol configuration was just a starting point. The 450PS High Performance Drive-E Powertrain Concept, demonstrates this ambition and the versatility of the Drive-E Powertrains.”

Developed in association with car suppliers such as AVL, Denso and Volvo Polestar Racing, the four-cylinder Drive-E 2.0-litre powertrain is a concept at the moment to show the benefits of down-sizing while adding more power.
