In a letter sent to dealers, Polaris is asking everyone to stop selling and/or driving the Slingshot immediately due to a potential issue with the steering bearings. More about the Slingshot on Zigwheels.com

Polaris Slingshot

Polaris Industries has issued a “Stop Sale and Stop Ride” for the Slingshot for two issues found on the three-wheeled Slingshot.

The first issue involves the ball bearings on the steering rack, which have been deemed faulty by Polaris. Due to the faulty ball bearings, the steering system could fail, resulting in an unexpected total loss of steering.

The second issue involves the roll hoops over the driver and passenger seats – a parts supplier has advised Polaris that some of the hoops are not up to the performance specs provided by Polaris and therefore may not protect the driver and passenger adequately in case of a crash.

In a letter to dealers, Polaris has remarked that service parts will be available for dealers to order starting January 22 and that the company will replace all parts and make necessary repairs at no cost to customers.

The Slingshot launch hasn’t gone down well for Polaris. First there have been legal hurdles with some DMVs not recognizing the three-wheeler as a motorcycle. Part of the problem is because of certain state laws which does not recognize the Slingshot as a motorcycle since seating it is not saddle-mounted but side-by-side seats for the driver and passenger like conventional cars.
