Honda’s latest offering in the SUV segment will share a lot with the City and the Mobilio

Honda BR-V

Honda will be launching its much-awaited SUV, the BR-V on 5 May 2016. The engine specs and the transmission details of the same have also been revealed by the Japanese carmaker.

Under the hood of the diesel variant will be Honda’s tried and tested 1.5-litre i-DTEC engine which produces 100PS of power along with 200Nm of torque. The petrol variant will be powered by a 1.5-litre i-VTEC unit that churns out 119PS of power along with 145Nm of torque.

The petrol engine will be offered with both manual as well an automatic (CVT) gearbox. However, the diesel engine will only be mated to a six-speed manual transmission. The engine specs of the upcoming BR-V are identical to the Honda City and the Mobilio and the only difference is the addition of a six-speed manual gearbox in the petrol variant. The addition of a sixth gear will lead to better fuel efficiency while driving on the highways.

The Honda BR-V has an ARAI approved mileage of 21.9 kmpl for the diesel variant which is best in its class. The manual petrol variant has an ARAI figure of 15.4kmpl whereas the automatic CVT variant will return 16 kmpl.

BR-V misses out on a touchscreen infotainment system which is almost a standard offering in this segment. BR-V’s chief competitors, Hyundai Creta and Renault Duster both offer a touchscreen infotainment unit. However, the main USP of BR-V is its seven-seater layout. The second and third-row passengers will have the convenience of roof-mounted air conditioning vents with individual blower setting.

Pricing will play a major role in determining BR-V’s success and it is most likely expected to start from Rs.9 Lakh and go all the way up to Rs. 13 lakh for the top-spec version.

The BR-V will take on the recently updated Renault Duster and Hyundai’s hot-selling Creta. Stay tuned for a detailed road test of the Honda BR-V.
