According to the latest two-wheeler sales report, the Honda Activa has emerged as the highest selling two-wheeler in the country for the month of June, 2015. Honda sold 1,96,913 units of the Activa in June, 2015 as opposed to 1,44,090 units it had managed in the same month the preceding year. This means the Honda Activa registered an impressive percentage growth of 37 per cent. This isn’t the first occasion that the Activa has beaten the Hero Splendor to become the largest selling two-wheeler in the country.
But it was the first occasion in 2015 that the scooter has beaten the country’s favourite commuter motorcycle. Honda is currently building the world’s largest scooter plant in Gujarat which is expected to be operational by end of 2015. Once the new plant is operational, the Japanese manufacturer claims that sales of the Activa scooter will further grow. The June sales results should be worrisome for Hero MotoCorp as it sold 1,95,108 units of the Splendor which resulted in a growth of just one per cent. The Hero Passion and HF Deluxe were in third and fourth place respectively. Sales for the Hero Passion dropped by four per cent while that of HF Deluxe reduced by two per cent.
The highest selling 125cc motorcycle in India – the Honda CB Shine was fifth in the list but the Japanese two-wheeler manufacturer will be concerned as sales dropped by 14 per cent. A face lifted version of the Honda CB Shine has been spotted with a possible launch around the corner and this should help arrest the slide in sales. The TVS XL Super which has a strong market in the rural areas saw sales of 59,304 units. The downturn of the Honda CB Shine can be credited to the Hero Glamour as it sold 57,477 units in June, 2015 which is a massive growth of 41 per cent.
The Bajaj CT was eighth on the list and despite launching new product, sales of the Pulsar series dropped by three per cent at 50,962. The surprise entry in the top 10 list was the TVS Jupiter. The Jupiter registered sales of 36,650 units in the June, 2015 becoming the second highest selling scooter in the country replacing the Hero Maestro. The TVS Jupiter has been a great success story for the Hosur based two-wheeler giant as it clocked sales over 5 lakh units in May, 2015 within 20 months of its debut.
