This year the Indian automobile market saw close to 80 launches, ranging from face-lifts to new vehicles. Here is a list of favorites that topped the bookings chart in 2011

Mahindra XUV 5OO

Mahindra XUV 5OO:

The much anticipated global SUV from the largest UV maker in the country created a huge bang. At a starting invitational price of Rs 10.8 lakh ex-showroom Delhi, the XUV 5OO proved to be the year’s biggest hit. In fact, M&M had to close bookings once they reached the 8000 units mark. “I was about to book the XUV 5OO, but was late by just a day. It is one of the best looking, best performing vehicles I have seen on Indian roads. I am happy to know that the bookings will  re-open next year,” said Gaurav Sharma, HR Manager in an MNC.

Honda Jazz

Honda Jazz:

At Rs 7.50 lakh, it did not catch the public fancy. However, once Honda revised the price to Rs 6 lakh for the top end version, the Jazz now has a four-month waiting period, thanks to its fuel efficiency and spacious interiors plus the practicality. “My idea was to drive a hatchback that does not compromise on space. I booked the Jazz two months ago. It is a long time to wait but I have no regrets,” said dentist Priyanka Mathur.

Maruti Suzuki Swift Diesel

New Swift Diesel

With refreshed interiors and exteriors, the new Swift Diesel was an obvious choice. The Swift diesel currently has an 8-month waiting period. "I had booked my Swift six months ago. I did feel that this was not quite the right decision, and all my friends suggested me the Swift Diesel. I don't mind waiting for the right car," said Gokul Nair, project manger at a think-tank.

New Hyundai Verna

This much anticipated vehicle has possibly the highest number of confused buyers due to availability of 10 variants of the car with two engine options, both in petrol and diesel. "The new Verna posed a most difficult decision for me, whether to go for the 1.4 or the 1.6 diesel. Both had almost the same 8-month waiting period. I was willing to wait and now am happy to own the Verna," said Junaid Hussain, an NRI from Dubai.

Hyundai i20

A fully loaded hatch which has the advantage of a diesel engine. "I simply love the car. The driving position, the gizmos, everything about the car is simply perfect. I thought of buying the petrol but when I heard about the diesel and waited for three months," said Tarun Tangar, who owns a publishing house.

A number of products from different manufacturers paved way for a healthier competition with more to choose for the buyer and a wide range of cars.
