British marquee Brough Superior will make a one-off wildcard entry in the Moto2 class at next month’s MotoGP round at Silverstone. The bike, named ‘Carbon 2’ will be ridden by British Supersport race winner Luke Mossey. It features a carbon fibre monocoque chassis and will be powered by a Moto2 standard specification 600cc four-cylinder Honda engine.
The race team will be run by Paul Taylor and John Keogh, who are heading the project on behalf of the soon-to-be-relaunched Brough Superior brand. The British MotoGP will take place at Silverstone on August 29-31.
Brough Superior motorcycles were renowned for their performance and quality of manufacture and were rare and expensive machines during their 20 year production run from 1919 when the first prototype was built. Most Broughs were custom-built to customer’s needs and rarely were two of the same configuration.
Dubbed the “Rolls Royce of motorcycles”, Brough Superiors were always exclusive because very few were made – about 3000 – and were expensive machines only a few could afford during the time. The Broughs achieved numerous race wins and speed records in the 1920s and 1930s and had famous owners including T.E. Lawrence, better known as Laurence of Arabia.
Every motorcycle was test ridden to ensure that it performed to specification, and was personally certified by founder George Brough. By the beginning of World War II, there were few takers for the expensive motorcycles and the market for luxury machines dwindled. George Brough however, continued to service motorcycles after production ceased, making parts until 1969.
In 2008, the brand was acquired by Mark Upham, a British engineer and motorcycle dealer who has, in recent years, produced a handful of machines to original specification. In 2013, Upham unveiled the first new Brough Superior in almost 70 years, the road going 2014 SS100, a retro styled motorcycle powered by a liquid-cooled, 997cc V-twin motor.
