Indian two-wheeler major Hero MotoCorp has partnered with Italian design firm ‘Engines Engineering’ to boost the development for its future product line-up. The Bologna-based firm has been developing and designing motorcycles for various manufacturers over the years and it will now share its expertise with Hero MotoCorp to help them develop their next generation two-wheelers.

Engines Engineering was acquired by another Indian conglomerate, Mahindra and Mahindra, back in 2008 but the Indian company sold its 70 per cent controlling stake in the Italian firm early this year back to its original promoter, Alberto Strazzari.

The move comes ahead of Hero MotoCorp’s extensive work on establishing its own full-fledged R&D centre in Jaipur, Rajasthan. In a bid to gain strong foothold in product design and development, Hero MotoCorp has existing partnerships with the US-based Erik Buell Racing (EBR) for latest in motorcycle technologies and AVL from Austria for engine development. With addition of Engines Engineering, the three-way partnership may give the much needed boost to Hero’s R&D enterprise.

@jazz350 - the problem with India is that its maufacturing industry is still backward. The advanced societies of the world moved from agriculture to manufacturing to services.India has directly jumped from agriculture to services. Even today, Indian firms cannot manufacture a good engine from scratch by themselves. You might have learnt some cool design software and think you can do it all, but you'll struggle to find the expertise to make that design real in this country. The Italians and Germans have been designing and making engines for over a century now. Most Indian designers don't even know how actual designing was done before Autodesk came along.

It is well known that India lacks the fundamental research capability in sectors across the spectrum. We are constantly buying defence equipment like planes, ships, helicopters from other countries and this goes down all the way to scooters, cars and motorbikes. Most of our engines in every field has been built on the designs of foreign companies. So it is a shame that we are still reliant on foreign technology after all these years. Japan, a country with no real resources, and totally destroyed after the war has built itself into a modern marvel, it makes all the technology itself moreover the keys parts of many other products produced in the world, like the IPhone, are dependent on high tech Japanese parts. India is way behind many, many countries and still has to copy, imitate or buy technology from abroad.
