Government may extend incentives on surrender of old vehicles

Thinking of dumping your old vehicle, the right time is here we say. The Ministry of Road, Transport and Highways (MoRTH) is planning to send a proposal to the Union Cabinet for approval that aims at providing incentives to consumers up to Rs 30,000 on discarding small vehicles and total benefits up to Rs 1.5 lakh for big vehicles.

According to Nitin Gadkari, Minister of Road Transport and Highways of India, this new proposal would be sent to the Finance Ministry soon. This move of the government comes at a time when the National Green Tirbunal (NGT) has banned diesel vehicles over ten years of age from plying into the national capital.

The government plans to set up 8-10 industrial units near ports like Kandla. These units will issue certificates for accepting old vehicles. These units will also recycle vehicles from India and abroad, thereby boosting employment.

Gadkari has also urged manufacturers to build Euro 6 compliant vehicles as early as possible, saying pollution is a big concern and NGT has also passed its order.

The Road and Transport Minister has also called upon the foreign manufacturers to supply bio-fuel based quality buses at economical prices and said India is a huge market for them.
