Google has unveiled its in-car solution - Android Auto at its annual I/O conference in San Francisco

Google introduces Android Auto

Google has pulled the wraps off its Android Auto at the 2014 Google I/O. This new interface brings navigation, communication, and music to the forefront of your car's media screen for safer and easier interactivity.

Google realises that the average person spends an hour in their car every day, and many of those people dangerously use their phone while driving. Android Auto aims to solve this by providing users with eyes-free, voice-driven navigation, communication and music.

By plugging in an Android phone, the car's media screen displays a Google Now-style home screen, which the company says is contextually aware and voice enabled. Android Auto is powered by the Android phone, but works with the steering wheel to respond to information.

Users can input a destination with their voice, or speak to dictate messages or initiate a phone call. Developers will also be able to make their own music and messaging apps via a freely available Android called the Auto SDK which Google will be releasing soon.

Google plans on Android Auto becoming available later this year and noted that over 40 new partners have joined the Open Automative Alliance.
