Audi to offer both Apple and Android systems in their cars

Audi is planning to bring Google’s Android Auto and Apple’s CarPlay in all their offerings by the year 2015. Audi will also be the first company to integrate these two popular platforms into one infotainment package as opposed to manufacturers choosing one or the other.

Apple CarPlay

Speaking on the announcement, Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg, Board Member for Technical Development, AUDI, said, “Our customers want to be ‘always on’ and use the services they know from their smartphones in cars as well. In this regard, we are working closely with leading companies like Google and Apple. In the future, customers will be able to use the functions available to them on their smartphones via the operating systems in their cars.

Data security will also play a vital role in the integration of a smartphone to the car and thus Audi is also working towards securing data against unauthorised access. The driver or owner will be in complete control of what data the system generates and will have to consent manually to key areas.

Android Auto

Audi is also the only luxury auto manufacturer that is a founding member of the Google Open Automotive Alliance (OAA). The OAA, launched in 2014, was mainly with the goal of integrating the popular Android platform and its corresponding apps into cars using the Android Auto banner. Audi’s development lab in silicon valley on the other hand was responsible for Apple CarPlay integration.
