General Motors to construct facility for race engine design and development in US

The Detroit-based automaker has begun work on an all-new facility called as General Motors Performance and Racing Centre (GMPRC). This new facility will house the design and development of race engines, and also an electric motor laboratory and gear centre. The GMPRC will be located in Pontiac, Michigan and is scheduled to be completed in 2016.

Speaking on the occasion, Steve Kiefer, Vice-President, GM Global Powertrain, said, “The GM Performance and Racing Centre, or GMPRC, will continue to develop some of the world's winningest race engines for Chevrolet and Cadillac. Connecting our race engineers with our global powertrain engineering teams will improve our customers' powertrains in terms of efficiency, reliability and durability. The centre will also provide exciting career opportunities for our engineering organisation.”

The GMPRC will be involved in with virtually every race series GM participates in, including the NASCAR Sprint Cup, Nationwide, and Camping World Truck series, IndyCar, TUDOR United SportsCar Championship, Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge, Pirelli World Challenge, NHRA, and Global Rally Cross.

In addition, the electric motor lab will produce prototype electric motors and validate manufacturing processes used in the production of electric and hybrid vehicle motors. The gear centre will support design and testing of gears for future transmission applications.

The facility is part of a major investment from GM to create a centralised powertrain engineering centre in Pontiac. The 1,38,000 sq ft addition is expected to bring 400 jobs there, and its 100 racing engineers currently based in Wixom, Michigan are expected to move into the Pontiac campus by mid-2015.
