CEO of BMW’s ‘M’ division has confirmed that future ‘M’ cars will not just be rear-wheel drive

German luxury carmaker BMW’s performance arm, the ‘M’ division will have all-wheel drive technology for its cars in the future. With power being sent to all four wheels, the M cars will have better traction levels which will make them slightly quicker of the line. The X5M and the X6M already come with BMW’s all-wheel-drive xDrive technology.

However, according to Frank van Meel, CEO, BMW M, the new ‘M’ saloon cars with AWD wouldn’t wear BMW’s ‘xDrive’ branding and will most likely have something like  ‘2+2WD’. Also, both RWD and AWD setups will be offered going forward. This upcoming all-wheel-drive system would mostly be rear-biased which will ensure that ‘M’ cars don’t lose out on their fun factor.

The first ‘M’ car to come with this setup is expected to be the next generation M5 which was spied testing recently. It will also have more power on offer and the all-wheel drive technology will aid in putting down all that added power in a better way.

Cars from Audi’s ‘RS’ division come equipped with Audi’s much famed ‘Quattro’ all-wheel drive technology.  Even the ‘Quattro’ tech on Audi’s ‘RS’ cars is quite rear biased. The system splits the power between the front/rear tyres to keep understeer in check which results in excellent grip while taking a sharp corner.
