Car buyers in India will have a choice of buying their models based on fuel efficiency from April 1, 2013. Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) director general Ajay Mathur said exactly a year after consumers would be able to choose cars based on their fuel-saving capacity.

The move is aimed at reducing fuel consumption, saving carbon emissions and making travel more economical for a car user. Of course, fuel efficient models of cars, like refrigerators and ACs, will cost more depending upon the efficiency rating. "It will be mandatory for manufacturers to bring only those car models in the market which are matching our fuel efficiency standards from April 1, 2013. They will have star categories with five-star being the most fuel efficient and one-star the least," he said at a press briefing on Wednesday.

"Under this car labelling programme, the car manufacturers will have to continuously reduce the average fuel consumption of cars sold by them over the next 10 years. BEE hopes to achieve the reduction in fuel consumption per 100 km from the present 6 litres to 5.1 litres by 2016 and up to 4.4 litres per 100 km by 2021," another official said.

Shockingly, only 9% to 16% car models are energy efficient in the country and average weight of cars are also increasing, which are affecting the fuel efficiency of cars. There has been a three-fold rise in the number of cars over the last decade. By 2020, this trend could bring an excessive fuel burden of 25 million oil equivalent. A consultation paper of BEE had revealed that of the total 330 car models in India, only 32 fell within five-star category, while 52 fell in four-star category.
