Ford wins the 2012 Global Mobile Award for an Emergency Assistance technology that alerts local emergency services post a crash

To be introduced in the all-new Ford's B-MAX set for unveiling at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show, the technology sends out a call for help to emergency services in the event of a crash.

The Emergency Assistance alerts local emergency service operators in the correct local language and identifies the accident location based on GPS and mobile network information. The alert forms a key part of Ford's voice-activated in-car connectivity system SYNC, which also makes its European debut in the B-MAX. The award was won for the category 'Best Mobile Innovation for Automotive, Transport or Utilities' at the 2012 Global Mobile Awards, Barcelona.

So how does it work? With the activation of an airbag or vehicle's emergency fuel pump getting shut-off, the technology prompts the vehicle to initiate an emergency call using an introductory message through the occupant's Bluetooth-connected mobile phone.

To get the technology in place, Ford worked closely with the European Emergency Number Association (EENA) to gain valuable input into the system design. Customers will be provided with Emergency Assistance free-of-charge as part of the customer-upgradeable SYNC platform.

Apart from crash alerts, the technology will read aloud incoming SMS text messages for you, automatically update phonebook entries and help you browse files by genre, artist, album, song and playlist using simple voice commands.

The new Ford B-MAX will be powered by 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine and will produce 125PS of power and 170Nm peak torque. The engine options will also include the 1.6-litre Duratorq TDCi diesel unit. We are hopeful, that Ford might bring in the Ford B-Max mini MPV in the Indian market to compete against the upcoming MPV from Maruti Suzuki, the Ertiga. Launching in the European market by the year-end, the B-MAX is expected to arrive on Indian shores by 2013.
