Audi introduces new 3.0-litre TDI engine

Audi has unveiled in Austria at the Vienna Motor Symposium the 3.0-litre V6 TDI clean diesel engine. The new engine will be available in two states of tune – 221PS and 276PS. The German automaker hasn’t confirmed the peak torque figures, but said it would be as high as 600Nm depending on the model.

Besides being more powerful than its predecessor, the updated six-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine is up to 13 per cent more fuel efficient and reduces carbon emissions by an average of 15g/km which is why Audi decided to slap the clean diesel suffix.

The new V6 diesel engine features a number of advanced technologies. The piston rings and pins have been optimised for minimal friction. The crankcase and the newly designed cylinder heads have separate coolant loops. The updated, innovative thermal management system improves efficiency even further. The turbocharger and the fully variable‑load oil pump have also been updated.

Also, for the first time, a Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) storage catalytic converter has been combined with a diesel particulate filter and SCR injection in a single assembly. Besides the new 3.0-litre TDI engine, Audi has also presented a new seven-speed dual clutch transmission for front-wheel drive cars with longitudinal rather than transverse engines. The German automaker says that the new transmission gives high efficiency and reduces carbon emissions by almost 10g/km.
