Ford Mustang celebrates 50th anniversary with special edition

Fifty years after launching perhaps the most iconic American car ever, the Ford Mustang, Ford has revealed a special 50^th Year Limited Edition Mustang. Created to honor five successful decades of the icon, only 1964 examples of the 50 Year Limited Edition Mustang will be built. The car will go on sale later this year and will debut at the upcoming 2014 New York Auto show. Co-incidentally, the original Ford Mustang too was unveiled in New York.

Based on the new 2015 Ford Mustang GT fastback with the optional performance pack, the 50 Year Limited Edition Mustang will offer the best in terms of performance and some unique design touches to the buyer. While this version of the Mustang comes fully loaded, the only two options will be a choice between two colors and a choice between an automatic or manual transmission. The two colors available will be either Wimbledon White, like the Mustang serial No. 0001 that was first sold to Capt. Stanley Tucker in April 1964, or Kona Blue. Both are exclusive to this limited-edition car and both were available on the first few Mustangs ever built.

Speaking on the occasion, Bill Ford, executive chairman, Ford Motor Company said, "We wanted to provide our most dedicated fans with the emotion of the original Mustang in a 21st century car. With this 50 Year Limited Edition, I believe we have accomplished our goal." Each 50 Year Limited Edition Ford Mustang will be individually numbered and will get a unique owner’s guide in a leather portfolio with the ’50 Year’ badge on the outside.

The 50 Year Limited Edition Ford Mustang takes several visual cues from Mustangs models of the past. The first and most obvious change as compared to the standard car is the new chrome grille which looks similar to the one found on the original 1964 ½ model year mustang and on subsequent models. The new alloy wheels too have been designed after the original chrome plated split-5 spoke wheels that were found on the original car. The 50 Year Limited Edition Ford Mustang also takes some cues from Gale Halderman’s 1962 design proposal that eventually made its way to the 1964 production car. By this we mean the rear 3-piece tail lamp cluster, each of which gets an individual chrome bezel surrounds. The new car will also get a large faux gas cap badge on the rear fascia which in addition to the GT badge will also read ’50 Years’.

The new upgraded 5.0-litre V8 engine making 426PS and 529Nm of torque will power the 50 Year Limited Edition Ford Mustang. Every car will also get the GT performance pack with its massive six piston Brembo brakes coupled with 255/40 R19 tyres with 9J wheels up front and 275/40 R19 tyres with 9.5J wheels at the back. Buyers who choose the automatic transmission option will be default get Ford’s limited slip differential package while manual transmission buyers will get a Torsen differential instead.
