Ford introduces its new SYNC 3 infotainment system

Ford has unveiled its new infotainment system called the ‘SYNC 3’. This new infotainment system will soon replace the American carmaker’s ‘MyFord Touch’ infotainment system which was launched back in 2007.

Although, the carmaker’s ‘MyFord Touch’ infotainment system could handle mobile media and phone needs in clever ways, the system did have a few technical glitches which were widely criticised by critics. To address these issues, Ford has introduced its new infotainment system - the SYNC 3, which the American carmaker bills as more faster, more intuitive and easier to use.

This new infotainment system drops Ford’s past partner Microsoft for Canada’s QNX software from Blackberry. SYNC 3 brings with it a variety of changes including improved graphics, more conversational voice recognition technology and Smartphone-like controls such as pinch-to-zoom and swipe gestures.

This new infotainment system gets simple screens with large fonts and big on-screen buttons. Each screen has fewer options which is a big change from Ford’s cluttered navigation system. Ford has included knobs and buttons for climate and basic audio functions, and stepped away from the touch-sensitive buttons. The screen also has a bright background to prevent washout from the sun. At night, the system automatically changes to a dark background to help reduce eye fatigue and minimise reflections on the windows.

Another important change incorporated in the SYNC 3 is the ability to update the system over a WiFi connection. This upgrade will not only enable users to save a possible trip to the dealer to fix issues, but will also potentially help keep the system relevant with changing technology, years after the car is bought.

Ford states that its Sync 3 infotainment system will be rolled out on all Ford vehicles in the international market by the end of 2016, and will then be expanded globally.
