Audi arranged a demonstration at Hockenheim race track to show what wonders its new autonomous car - the Audi RS7 could do. The RS7 conquered the Hockenheimring racing circuit by covering a lap of the track sans a driver.

The driverless RS7 managed to complete the lap at racing speed and in a little over two minutes, with orientation on track provided by specially corrected GPS signals transmitted to the car through a WiFi connection.

Commenting on this achievement, Ulrich Hackenberg, Board Member for Technical Development at Audi AG, said, “The top performance by the Audi RS 7 today substantiates the skills of our development team with regard to piloted driving at Audi. The derivations from series production, particularly in terms of precision and performance, are of great value for our further development steps.”

The RS7 piloted driving concept also had 3D cameras which filmed the circuit and worked in conjunction with an on-board computer program which compared the image information provided by the camera with a pre-loaded data set.

The German carmaker states that the Audi RS7 piloted driving concept is the result of the stringent research and development which kickstarted 10 years ago in collaboration with Stanford University and Electronics Research Laboratory.
