Ford develops all-new EcoBlue diesel engine

Ford Motor Company has unveiled an all-new EcoBlue diesel engine offering higher power rating, improved fuel efficiency and reduced emissions. The new engine has been developed from scratch by the UK and German Ford engineers. The new 2.0-litre EcoBlue diesel engine will be the successor to the ageing 2.2-litre TDCi motor, which was introduced by the company back in 2005. Ford had received a great response for the 1.0-litre EcoBoost petrol engine and is aiming high with the EcoBlue engine that will soon power passenger and commercial vehicles in the market.

The design of the EcoBlue engine provides reduced friction between moving parts and cleaner combustion. The exhaust system makes use of advance materials for ultra-low emissions and up to 55 per cent reduction in NOx levels to have it compliant to the stringent Euro VI norms. The engine also has some innovative technological advancements that include a low-inertia turbocharger, integrated intake system and a new high-pressure fuel injection system. The turbocharger makes use of rocket-engine materials designed for high-temperature applications and is lighter in weight. The reduced weight allows the turbo to spool quicker, which in turn improves the low-end torque of the engine.

The engine will be capable to offer three states of tune in terms of power output - 105PS, 130PS and 170PS. The company is planning to offer the EcoBlue engine with different power outputs ranging from 100PS to 240PS. The engine will be capable of generating torque of 340Nm at mere 1250 rpm, which is around 20 per cent higher than current DuraTorq TDCi engine.

In India, the Ford Endeavour comes with the 2.2-litre engine. We can expect Ford to offer the new 2.0-litre EcoBlue engine, in a detuned state, in the SUV. It will also allow Ford to sell the Endeavour in Delhi complying with the diesel ban. Ford has also mentioned that it is working on a 1.5-litre EcoBlue offering as well.
