Audi will be showcasing the five-door avatar of the latest generation A3 Sportback at the 2012 Paris Motor Show. The highlights of the new car are its longer wheelbase and light weight. While the wheelbase has increased by 58 millimetres, its exterior footprint has only increased marginally. The front axle has been moved further forward by 40 millimetres and the engine has been tilted backward by 12 degrees to reduce front overhang and better weight distribution. Weighing just 1,205kg the new five-door A3 Sportback will have true potential on the road.
To exploit the potential of the lightweight body and chassis Audi has a host of powertrains lined up for the five-door A3 Sportback. Initially there will be one diesel engine and two petrol engine options.
The diesel is a 2.0-litre TDI that generates 150PS of power and 320Nm of torque, enough to propel the car from 0-100km/h in 8.4 seconds and onwards to a top speed of 212km/h.
The petrol is a 1.4-litre TFSI engine that generates 122PS of power and 200Nm of torque. The engine can power the car from 0-100km/h in 9.3 seconds and onwards to a top speed of 201km/h. There is another version of the 1.4-litre TFSI engine that generates 140PS of power and 250Nm of torque. This version of the engine with Cylinder-on-Demand technology can power the car from 0-100km/h in 8.4 seconds with a top speed of 211km/h.
Four more engine options will be offered by the end of 2012, including a 1.6-litre TDI diesel engine that can power the car from 0-100km/h in 10.9 seconds and onwards to a top speed of 193km/h. The second will be a more powerful version of the 2.0-litre TDI diesel engine that will pack in 184PS of power and 380Nm of torque. It will give the car a top speed of 230km/h and 0-100km/h will be dealt with in 7.4 seconds. The third will be a lightweight 1.2-litre TFSI petrol engine that will generate 102PS of power and 175Nm of torque. This engine will give the five-door A3 Sportback a 0-100km/h time of 10.7 seconds and a top speed of 192km/h. The fourth will be a 1.8-litre TFSI petrol engine that packs in 180PS of power and 250Nm of torque. The engine will be mated to Audi’s S tronic automatic gearbox giving the car a 0-100km/h time of 7.3 seconds and a top speed of 230km/h.

All engines of the Audi A3 Sportback will be mated to a six-speed manual gearbox with the option of the S tronic automatic gearbox on offer, except the 1.8-litre TFSI engine which as mentioned earlier will be offered with the S tronic auto box.
Inside, the cabin is pretty much all black with silver metallic inlays. Some of the switchgear will also feature an aluminium finish. Audi will offer an optional interior lighting package with subtle LED lights. The five-door A3 Sportback also features a new Modular Infotainment platform (MIB) with hi-tech 3D graphics mated to a 7.0-inch high resolution monitor. It comes with 10 GB of memory and a DVD drive.
Safety features for the five-door Audi A3 Sportback include cruise control, lane change assist, park assist system and optional Audi pre sense basic and Audi pre sense front.
The car will be showcased at the upcoming 2012 Paris Motor Show.
Audi has already begun taking orders for the five-door A3 Sportback in the UK with prices starting from £19,825 (Rs. 17,22,926).
