Eyes firmly on the number one position of the Indian two-wheeler segment, Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India announced that it will expand the annual production capacity of its third two-wheeler production plant located at Narsapura, near Bengaluru to meet demands and prepare for its future sales targets. Most popular Honda two-wheeler models have long waiting period due to which some prospective buyers turn to competition which usually has ready delivery.
Currently, Honda has its first plant at Manesar, Haryana which churns out 16 lakh units of two-wheelers annually and the second plant located at Tapukara, Rajasthan with production capacity of 12 lakh units per year. As of now, the Narsapura plant has an annual production capacity of 18 lakh units and Honda is building a new production line there with an additional investment of Rs 585 crore. This move will add six lakh units, and bump up the total annual production capacity of this plant to 24 lakh units before the end of 2016.
Besides, HMSI is also constructing its fourth two-wheeler plant in at Vithalapur, Gujarat which is scheduled to become operational in the first half of 2016, adding another 12 lakh units capacity every year, increasing HMSI’s overall annual production capacity to a whooping 64 lakh units.
Elaborating on this Keita Muramatsu, President and CEO - Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India Pvt. Ltd, said, “Honda is strengthening its ‘Make in India’ resolve through steady and strategic investments with a long term objective of creating 39 per cent additional capacity within 3.5 years. We are planning to increase the number of associates in the plant by approximately 1,900. This investment will provide new opportunities for expansion of brand Honda in the largest two-wheeler market of the world.”
