Federal-Mogul bags two awards from Automotive News PACE in 2011

The Automotive News PACE Award recognises automotive suppliers for significant innovations, technological advancement and business performance. This year Federal-Mogul Corporation received two awards at the 2011 Automotive News PACE awards ceremony in Detroit earlier this year. In the field of innovations in new products, components or systems that have significant market impact and act as "game-changers" in the automotive industry Federal-Mogul’s EcoTough-coated piston and LKZ oil control ring were recognised in the Product category. The company’s IROX polymer bearing overlay and K16 bonded Unipiston were selected as PACE finalists.

The EcoTough-coated piston for petrol engines low wear and low friction properties in a single application. This superior wear and tear resistance for pistons and engine, it also helps better fuel efficiency thereby reducing exhaust gas emissions. 

The LKZ oil control ring is an innovative two-piece oil ring for direct injection petrol engines. The patented oil ring reduces oil consumption by 50% and friction by up to 15% over that of normal two-piece oil rings. 

Federal-Mogul’s IROX Polymer overlay is a new polymer coated bearing shell for heavily boosted engines. It helps withstand high mechanical loads and better fuel economy. IROX Polymer overlay overcomes lubrication challenges associated with frequent engine re-starts in hybrid powertrians as well as on cars equipped with start/stop systems. It helps increase the lifespan of crankshafts and bearing shells by as much as 5 times in heavy duty applications. 

The company’s K16 bonded Unipiston is a single-piece bonded hydraulic clutch piston for automatic transmissions helps overcome an energy intensive production process for the piston seal. K16 elastometer compound eliminates oven curing stage traditionally used to develop the piston seal. K16 also exceeds the performance of previous seals in terms of wear resistance and life expectancy. The new production process helps reduce the carbon footprint of the company’s sealing operations via significant reduction in CO2 emissions and natural consumption.
