Back in 2009 when BMW Motorrad launched the S 1000RR it was the first production litre-class superbike to have ABS as a standard fitment. Now the German bikemaker plans to take the ABS technology a notch higher as it unveiled the new ABS Pro system. According to BMW Motorrad, the new system enables the rider to use the ABS system even while cornering. The ABS Pro is the advanced version of the Race ABS system that is found on the BMW HP4 superbike and it prevents the rear-wheel from locking even with sudden usage of brakes while going around a bend.

This reduces abrupt changes in steering force on shock-braking manoeuvres and stops the motorcycle from rearing up unintentionally. Technically speaking the ABS Pro system works in conjunction with the bank angle of the motorcycle. The bank angle determines the roll rate, yaw rate and transverse acceleration provided by the various sensors that are fed into the Dynamic Traction Control(DTC)  and electronic system for optimal performance.

The ABS Pro is only available in ‘Rain’ and ‘Sport’ mode as the system according to BMW has been developed for street riding. So the rider can disengage ABS Pro system by selecting ‘Race’ and ‘Slick’ mode on the DTC system while riding at race track. The ABS Pro system is available as a retrofit option on the BMW HP4 from October 2014 onwards and has been priced at Rs 31,000 in the German market. It is expected that BMW will make the ABS Pro as a retrofit option on other bikes from its portfolio by 2015.
