Diesel cars to be phased out in France

Nearly 80 per cent of the cars in France run on oil burners. However, the French government plans to change this scenario soon. As a part of a wider environmental effort, France’s Prime Minister Manuel Valls, has planned to gradually phase out the diesel-powered vehicles from the country from 2015.

The French government has plans to introduce a vehicle identification system and classification system that will rank cars by how much pollution they emit. The local authorities will thus have the power to ban the filthiest vehicles from plying in the city.

Valls has stated that France has long favoured the diesel engine, and it needs to be stopped progressively. He further stated that the taxation system needed to change in favour of promoting more ecological choices. Currently, according to the French taxing methods diesel is around 15 per cent cheaper than petrol.

Earlier this year, the French government had announced that owners who scrapped a diesel-powered car to buy an electric vehicle would receive a bonus of up to Rs 7.6 lakh.
