The Mahindra XUV500 and the Scorpio with the detuned 1.99-litre engines will only go on sale in the Delhi NCR region for now

Putting all rumours to rest, Mahindra has now introduced its popular SUVs, the XUV500 and the Scorpio with a downsized 1.99-litre engine. This move has been made in light of the recent Supreme Court ruling which banned the sale of all diesel vehicles displacing more than 2,000cc. Although the judgement is currently just for the first quarter of 2016, Mahindra believes that it will be extended after the said period as well.

Speaking on this occasion, Pravin Shah, President & Chief Executive (Automotive), Mahindra & Mahindra said, “This new engine, the development of which started in August 2014, is now ready for launch on both the New Generation Scorpio and the New Age XUV500. We do hope that our customers would enjoy driving these vehicles which deliver the performance of our currently on offer 2.2 litre mHawk engines”.

This is essentially the same mHawk 2.2-litre unit that has been doing duty on the XUV500 and the Scorpio but has now been downsized to keep the cars in line with the new regulations. This change in displacement has not resulted in a change in power and torque. Both these cars will continue to make 120 horses and 280Nm. Deliveries of the Mahindra XUV500 and the Scorpio with the 1.99-litre engine commence today in the Delhi NCR Region. This same downsized engine is also expected to make its way to other states in two months time. There will be no change in the price of the XUV500 and the Scorpio.
